The 1811–1812 New Madrid earthquakes were a series of powerful earthquakes that struck the central Mississippi Valley, with the first major quake occurring on December 16, 1811. These earthquakes, including three major shocks and numerous aftershocks, were among the largest to hit the contiguous United States east of the Rocky Mountains.
The quakes caused significant damage, including landslides, ground fissures, and changes to the Mississippi River's course. This made the Mississippi River flow backwards and form Reelfoot lake. The lake is roughly 16,000 acres.
Today, the lake is a prime destination for anglers and visitors from across the country, especially since the lake is prime for crappie and bluegill. Eagles and other migratory birds live here as well.
Escape the hustle of everyday life and experience the magic of Reelfoot Lake.
